Search Tips

Search Tips

A query can be just a word or a phrase. The search returns a list of articles that contain any of the words you typed. You can use the search tips on this page to refine your query to a more focused list of articles.

Use . . .

To . . .

* (Asterisk)

Search for words with the same prefix. For example, type install* to find articles that contain the words install, installed, installing, installation, and so on.

** (Double Asterisk)

Search for all forms of a word. For example, type sink** to find articles that contain the words sink, sinking, sank, and sunk.

NEAR

Search for two words that are close to each other. For example, type print NEAR merge to find articles that contain the words print and merge. You find the same articles you would find if you used AND instead. The difference between using AND and NEAR is in the order in which articles are listed. When you use NEAR, the order of results is based on how close together the words are in the articles. If the words are close together in a article, that article is at the top of the list of results.

AND NOT

Limit a search by excluding articles containing specific words. For example, type windows AND NOT nt, to find articles that contain the word windows while excluding articles that contain Windows NT.
