Career Matrix: Key to the Future

Career Matrix: Key to the Future

The new edition of COACH's Health Informatics Professional Core Competencies contains a unique resource, the Career Matrix, that will aid in the effort to ensure there are adequate numbers of health informatics (HI) professionals in Canada.

(updated November 2009)

The breadth, depth and diversity of HI is captured on the matrix, featuring 65 jobs in seven competency areas over five levels of “mastery” – 1. Emerging Professional, 2. Competent, 3. Proficient, 4. Expert and 5. Master. The development process included mapping 500+ job descriptions to the Core Competencies and forecasting future jobs by examining emerging roles in leading-edge implementations of the electronic health record (EHR).

You can download the matrix and Core Competencies Version 2.0 (March 2009) for your reference. IMPORTANT: The matrix and document are copyrighted, so reproduction of these materials is prohibited without permission from COACH.

  • minor wording changes to several other competencies;
  • streamlined introductory sections.

The 46 core competencies – knowledge areas, skills, attitudes and judgments that HI professionals use to perform safely and effectively in a broad range of practice environments and settings are detailed in the document. Other key components are the conceptual framework, Ethical Principles and the following definition.

Health informatics is the intersection of clinical, information management/information technology (IM/IT) and management practices to achieve better health.
